Maps Get New Zoom Controls

Here at Tableau, we're excited to announce that with a recent upgrade to the Tableau Public servers, all Tableau Public maps have been updated to provide brand new zoom controls. Additionally, left-mouse click-and-drag on Tableau Public map results in pan instead of rectangular select as it did previously.

The change to the left-mouse click-and-drag behavior makes Tableau Public maps behave more like the online maps we're all used to interacting with, such as Google Maps and Bing Maps. We've received feedback from bloggers and journalists that readers were sometimes confused by this difference in interactivity, so we went forward with this change as part of our preparation for the release of version 9.0 which will come in early 2015.

The new Zoom Controls now include two new selection types: 1) Radial Selection and 2) Lasso Selection:

1. Radial Selection
The Radial Selection zoom control allows your readers to select all marks that fall within a circular area centered on the location you first click on, and extending to the radius you click on next:

2. Lasso Selection
The Lasso Selection feature allows readers to select all marks that fall within an irregular area that they draw on the map:

These new Zoom Controls are only available in the browser at present. The Zoom Controls in the Tableau Public and Tableau Desktop applications are the same as before, though they will change to be consistent with the in-browser behavior with the launch of 9.0 next year.

It's actually quite surprising how much you can study just by association.
