Recreating Charles Minard's "Napoleon’s March"
John Emery uses Tableau to pay homage to Charles Minard's famous data visualization. Once declared "probably the best statistical graphic ever produced," this visualization portrays the losses suffered by Napoleon's army in the Russian campaign of 1812.
The thick band shows the size of the army at each position. Hover to see number of troops during the advance (beige) and retreat (black). See also temperature and time scales below.
