Iron Viz: goes on Safari Contest FAQs

Back to Contest Page

The Iron Viz: goes on Safari is a chance to prove your dataviz skills and win big.

What are the terms of participating?

Any resident of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, South Korea, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom or the United States not employed by Tableau Software can participate as long as they follow our guidelines and rules.

How many entries may one person make?

Please limit your entries to 2.

What if I submit an entry early, and then later re-work my viz and want to replace my first entry?

That’s fantastic – feel free to do that up until the close of the contest. Tableau Public automatically supports updates to your viz. You do not need to resubmit your entry form, simply update your workbook and save your changes keeping your viz name unchanged. Your viz will automatically update. We won't look at the entries until the end of the submission period, so update them as much as you want.

Can I really use any data?

For the Iron Viz: goes on Safari, you can use any data set(s) you find interesting, provided they are related to animal or plants, and legally can be shared online. Please be considerate of others, and do not use a data set that might be found overly offensive.

Is there any strong requirement around making my data set(s) or viz downloadable by others?

We don't want to force anyone, but we do appreciate when you put a link to your source(s) and allow 'Download' for the viz you enter. This allows others to learn from your work. That's how many of us became better at creating vizzes.

Who can I contact if I am having problems with Tableau Public?

You may contact Tableau Public at public@tableau.com, please include Viz Contest in the subject line.

How will the winner be chosen?

A panel of judges comprised of Tableau employees will evaluate all submissions based on the following criteria:

  • 25% - Design
  • 25% - Storytelling (note: does not have to use the StoryPoints Tableau feature)
  • 25% - Analysis
  • 25% - Overall

I heard there won't be a Crowd Favorite prize, is that true?

Absolutely true. China is among the new countries who can take part in the Iron Viz, and Twitter doesn't work in mainland China. The usual Twitter Popular Vote just didn't seem fair. Instead, we're creating a Best Rookie Category for first time contestants!

What is the schedule?

9 June 2017 - Submission Period Opens
25 June 2017 at 11:59pm PDT - Submission Period Ends
