What are the terms of participating?

There will be 2 categories in the competition – School (Secondary and Junior College) and Institute of Higher Learning (Polytechnic, Institute of Technical Education (ITE), University). Any resident in Singapore studying full time and belongs to either categories can participate as long as they follow our guidelines and rules. All submitted material must be original and created by the team members.

How many entries can each school make?

There is no limit to the number of entries submitted by each school. However, for students competing in the School Category, each submission must be made by a team consisting of 3 persons studying in the same school and supported by a teacher-in-charge. For students competing in the IHL Category, only individual submissions are accepted.
Each team/individual, depending on the category, is allowed to submit only one entry. In your submission, each team/individual must describe the objective of the entry and the analysis it offers in less than 500 words.

I am new to Tableau. How do I participate in this competition?

As only vizzes published on Tableau Public will be considered as a valid entry for the contest, start off by downloading Tableau Public here and create your profile! Download one of our data sets or one of your own, and start exploring. You can also utilize our
resources page for more help on how to use Tableau. When you’ve completed your viz, submit your entry!

Participating in the School Category? Submit your Viz here!

Participating in the IHL Category? Submit your Viz here!

If you’ve used your own data set, remember to acknowledge that you’ve done so in your submission form.

What if I submit an entry early, and then later re-work my viz and want to replace my first entry?

That’s fantastic – feel free to do that up until the close of the contest. Tableau Public automatically supports updates to your viz. You do not need to resubmit your entry form, simply update your workbook and save your changes. Your embedded viz will automatically update on the webpage you have posted it to. We won't look at the entries until the end of the submission period, so update them as much as you want.

What data can I use?

For this the 2017 NIC Face-off | Community-driven Data Stories contest, you can use the data sets that Tableau has provided OR use one of your own sourced from the web. Just make sure that these data sets align with the 3 themes in this competition. The sourced data set has to be publicly accessible and should be clearly acknowledged in the submission form.

Tell me more about the Hands-on Workshops that are being conducted.

Tableau will be conducting hands-on workshops for both categories. This is an optional workshop as students can still participate in this competition without attending any of the hands-on workshops.
Both workshops will have the same content and during the session, students will learn how tell data-driven stories with visualizations. Students will be shown how to connect to data and visualize their queries without writing a single line of code. They will also learn how to create a dashboard from scratch and see how they can quickly analyze, visualize and share information. At the end of the session, the students will be able to publish a simple completed dashboard onto Tableau Public.
Students can choose to attend either of the workshops within the applicable category. Seats are limited on a first-come-first-served basis.
