An Analysis of Medal Winners from the Winter Games

With the 2010 Games well under way in Vancouver, a look at past medal winners seemed appropriate. As you might expect, the vast majority of medals have been won by Nordic countries, the United States, Russia, Germany and Austria. Click on a country or specific competition to view medals by year/venue.

An analysis of the top ten countries reveals that there are many different paths to success at the Olympic games. Some countries, like Austria and the Netherlands, excel at one or two sports and dominate them so completely that they gain a high medal count. Others, like the US and Germany have five or more competitions in which they focus and gain several medals each year- perhaps not domination but success nevertheless.
