Tableau Public is made for sharing

on September 27, 2013

The whole purpose of Tableau Public is to share data in an interactive way with other people on the web. The more sharing, the better. Whether you're the original author of a visualization, or a reader who has discovered something amazing, we've tried to make it as easy as possible for you to spread the good word.

So how can you share vizzes with others? Every viz has social share icons in the footer that pack a little more punch than I first noticed. We'll use Adam McCann's "Top Movie Directors by Film" project that you can see on his website here.

1. Share the original visualization
This is the most straightforward form of sharing. You take exactly what the author created, and you share it with your friends on twitter or facebook. Here's an example using Facebook:

2. Share a filtered view of the visualization
You can also share a customized version of the dashboard with your friends and followers. Just interact with the visualization in any way - highlight or filter to something you find interesting - and then use the social share icons in the viz footer.

Here I call attention to the fact that Peter Jackson's movies seem to be slipping in rating, something I think my friends would be interested in knowing:

3. Re-embed it on your own website
Click "Share" in the footer and copy and paste the embed HTML code into your own website CMS.

Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but be sure to give credit where credit is due by mentioning and linking to the original author, like this:

"Check out this amazing interactive graphic by Adam McCann showing film director's ratings over their careers. See the original here."

4. Email a static image of the visualization
For those of us stuck in staticland, it's always possible to download a png or pdf version of the dashboard and email it to a friend. Just click on the "Export" icon in the bottom of the footer and select "Image" or "PDF":

Our goal with Tableau Public is to spread the data visualization bug and shine a spotlight on authors out there who are doing amazing work. That's why we launched Tableau Public in the first place, that's why we find and curate one stunning data visualization every day, and that's why we make it easy to share visualizations with others, so share away!

All the best,
