What are the terms of participating?

Any resident of AUSTRIA, BELGIUM, DENMARK, FRANCE, GERMANY, ITALY, IRELAND, NETHERLANDS, NORWAY, SPAIN, SWEDEN, AND UNITED KINGDOM and not employed by Tableau Software or Google can participate as long as they follow our guidelines and rules.

How many entries may one person make?

Please limit your entries to 1.

What data can I use?

You are required to use GDLET as your data source. You can make a data viz on any topic you want as long as you got the data off of GDELT and use Google BigQuery.

Who can I contact if I am having problems with Tableau Desktop?

You may contact Tableau at GoogleChallenge@tableau.com, and please include "Viz Challenge" in the subject line.

How will winner be chosen?

There will be three (3) Rounds where the Panel will narrow down to choose one (1) winner.

Round 1: A panel of judges, comprised of Tableau and Google employees and industry experts (“Panel”) will evaluate all submissions based on the following criteria:

  • 25% Insight and patterns discovered
  • 25% Innovation in workbook design
  • 25% Innovation in merging of data sources
  • 25% Innovation in use of Google Cloud Platform beyond Big Query e.g. Dataflow, Google Compute Engine, DataProc, etc.

The Panel will evaluate and attribute a score between 0-100 to each Submission made up of scores between 0-25 for each of the above listed criterion. The top twenty submissions that receives the highest overall score from the Panel will be selected to continue on to Round 2.

Round 2: On 20 May, 2016, the top twenty (20) contestants will be notified by email by the Sponsor. The Viz will be posted 23-27 May, 2016 at a time and location place that will be defined by the Sponsor. On 30 May, 2016 the Sponsor will announce the top three (3) contestants to continue on to Round 3, based on:

  • 50% - Score from Round 1
  • 50% - Number of views of the Viz from Tableau Public

Round 3: On 30 May, the Sponsor will contact the three finalists to attend Tableau Conference On Tour London on 13-15 June, 2016. If a selected contestant does not respond to the notification attempt within two (2) days from the first notification attempt, then such selected contestant will be disqualified and an alternate contestant will be selected from among the remaining contestants based on the judging criteria described herein.

What is the schedule?

April 6 - Submission Period Opens
May 16 - Submission Period Ends
May 20 - Top 20 vizzes published by Tableau to Tableau Public
May 20-27 - Period when vizzes are live on Tableau Public
May 30 - Finalists are chosen and awarded ticket to TC On Tour London
June 13-15 - Winner is announced!
